1,173 adults surveyed early this month by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion rated “whatever” the most annoying word of 2013 – and in fact the most annoying word for the past five years. Mary Griffith, media director for Marist said: “The word can be very dismissive and rude. It’s a put-down to some extent and it can signal to the other person that what they are saying is not important.” The other annoying words on this year’s list include: “like” (which ranked second), “you know”, “just sayin’, and “obviously”.
