One Book One Chicago has chosen Toni Morrison’s latest work, “A Mercy”, as its 19th title for 2010. Set in the 17th century, “A Mercy” is the tale of African American enslaved girl, Florens, the Anglo Dutch landowner, Jacob Vaark, and other white indentured servants who labor on the Northeast American farm where Florens is a slave. Programming around this year’s title include a September 7 opening event at the Harold Washington Library Center, featuring a brief performance from the opera, Margaret Garner.
Further events include a history panel with local scholars on the intersection between creativity and research at the Newberry Library on October 7th; a staged reading with Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble members on October 12th at the Harold Washington Library, and a reading and talk on October 19th at the Chicago Symphony Center.
