Stuck in the Amsterdam airport? Visit the library!

February 17, 2011

Frequent fliers and international travelers are familiar with the dismay of long delays and having to put up with the usual airport ambience or lack thereof: uncomfortable chairs, overpriced food, long mall-like concourses selling goods at ridiculous prices. Last summer in Amsterdam’s Shiphol Airport a welcome addition was opened for all travelers to enjoy–a public library. NPR’s “The World” featured this innovative approach to airport visits on yesterday’s program. What struck me as so wonderful is that the $400,000 annual operating cost for the non-lending library was deemed well worth it by the Dutch airport management. Yesss!
