This NYTimes article discusses the pros and cons of a major overhaul planned for the New York Public library building on 42d St. One goal is to modernize the facility and save money by shutting two smaller branches, the Mid-Manhattan branch across the street and the Science, Business, and Industry Library.
After meeting with the architect and library officials the author has personally decided he’s against the plans for a variety of reasons. Kimmelman’s main point is that much more discussion should be held even after 4 years of meetings. One issue is that the research section would be combined with the circulating area. He also criticizes the architect’s plans, claiming they resemble a mall! Check out the photos in the article and see what you think.
