Prof. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. just published a companion book to the DVD shown on PBS this spring called Black in Latin America. According to the article, only a small fraction of Africans (from the slave trade) ended up in the United States, with many more living permanently in other countries. Judging by the enormous impact of blacks on US culture, it seems fair that Latin America could serve as a vast reservoir of research material. When I searched EPL and CCS I found some items, including Gates’ book. I have the sense he is trying to address an overlooked area of history. Keep an eye out for this fascinating subject.
