Our latest Book Trailer of the Week is this stylish short for Carl Hiaasen’s outrageously offbeat novel Star Island.  The madcap fun begins just as 22-year-old fading pop star Cheryl Bunterman (aka Cherry Pye) is frantically attempting a comeback designed by her uber stage mom, Weed Whacker wielding bodyguard, and fraternal twin publicists who’ve spent thousands to look identical.  However, when Cheryl overdoses yet again and her stunt double is mistakenly kidnapped by an obsessed paparazzo, the harebrained scheme goes hilariously awry.  Filled with Hiaasen’s trademark pop culture barbs and environmental subplot, Star Island is a rollicking lampoon of celebrity life in the fast lane.

Our next Book Trailer of the Week is for Susan Casey’s riveting investigative study The Wave: In Pursuit of the Rogues, Freaks, and Giants of the Ocean.  A 2010 NY Times Notable Book, The Wave travels around the world and back in time to search out gargantuan walls of water including a 1,740 foot-high monster that pummeled the Alaskan coast in 1958.  Along the way, Casey meets scientists scrambling to make sense of the monster wave phenomenon as well as extreme surfing legend Laird Hamilton on his quest to hang 10 at 100 feet.  Mesmerizing and vivid, The Wave “brilliantly portrays humans beings confronting nature at its most ferocious.”  Surf’s up.

In recognition of the new year and the steady march of time, our first Book Trailer of the Week for 2011 is this intriguing clip for Pulitzer Prize-winner Jonathan Weiner’s Long for This World: The Strange Science of Immortality.  A 2010 NY Times Notable Book, this rollicking scientific adventure traces the history of longevity research while focusing on the controversial work of Aubrey de Grey, a bearded radical convinced humans will soon achieve life spans of thousands of years.  Fast-paced and fascinating, Long for This World makes hard science understandable while asking, “Even if we could live forever, would we really want to?”

Our final Book Trailer of the Week for 2010 is this chilling award winner for Norwegian author Jo Nesbo’s haunting mystery The Snowman.  Billed as the perfect crime fiction fix for Stieg Larsson fans, The Snowman is the fifth heartstopping read in a bestselling series favorably compared to Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch books.  So check it out, or if you prefer, climb aboard on the ground floor with The Redbreast, the series opener voted by Norwegian book clubs as the best crime novel ever.  Either way, though, beware… this snowman is nothing like Frosty.

This Book Trailer of the Week is in belated celebration of the great Jane Austen’s 235th birthday on December 16th.  Selected as one of 2009’s best book videos, the hilarious clip is for Ben H. Next up as our Book Trailer of the Week is this 1940’s-style newsreel for Ben Macintyre’s Operation Mincemeat.  Recently named a 2010 NY Times Notable Book, this rousing real-life spy thriller tells the tale of the World War II ruse concocted by the British and Lieutenant-Commander Ian Fleming that used a corpse to fool the Nazis about the invasion of Sicily.  So check this page turner out, but before you do, stay tuned for this important message:

Our latest Book Trailer of the Week is this vaguely creepy clip for Emma Donoghue’s Room.  Short-listed for the 2010 Man Booker Prize and also honored as a NY Times Notable Book, this outstanding novel is narrated by five-year-old Jack, a boy whose whole world is the 11-by-11-foot room in which his 19-year-old mother is being held captive.  Room is riveting, suspenseful, and ultimately a moving story about “the triumph of a mother’s ferocious love.”  So check it out, and now… roll film.
