We are happy to welcome Barbara Freeman back to EPL this month for a brand-new Local Art @ EPL exhibit.  After making her library debut in 2010, the local photographer and film director has returned with an intimate exploration of Illinois’ rural communities titled smalltown: faith, flags, & firearms.  You can catch this inspired series on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch through the end of September and also check out more of Ms. Freeman’s photography and film work at the website for her production company Freeman Pictures, Inc.

“All the Steps Before the Leap” by Matt Glavin

We are thrilled to announce a special summer treat for our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  Throughout August, we’re proudly featuring over two dozen eye-catching images from the 2011 Faces of Evanston Photo Contest right here on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch.  Based on the common theme “Reflection,” the 30 featured photographs include Matt Glavin’s 1st place winner “All the Steps Before the Leap” (above) as well as prizewinners by Becky Crump, Laurie Werner, Julie Mahieu, Heidi Randhava, and Tim Dilich.  So make plans to catch Faces of Evanston as it wraps up its year-long, citywide tour and learn more about the annual Kiwanis-sponsored competition by visiting the websites for Faces of Evanston and the Kiwanis Club.

We are pleased to introduce local photographer Lisa D’Innocenzo as the next artist in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  From now through the end of July, her compelling collection A World Drained of Color will be on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch.  Born from an interest in rural and urban landscape, the photographs explore “the tension between restless elemental energy and the dense immobility of human-made structures” while raising questions about “the nature of power, endurance, strength, and mutability.”  You can meet Ms. D’Innocenzo to discuss her work at an EPL reception on Saturday, July 14th at 4 p.m., and make sure to check back with Off the Shelf  later in the month for a featured interview with the artist herself.  Stay tuned.

An Interview with Timothy L. Campbell & Alice DuBois

Timothy L. Campbell and Alice DuBois are Evanston-based artists who made their solo Local Art @ EPL debuts back in 2010.  Now the pair have joined their creative forces for a stunning return exhibit currently on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch.  Mixing oils, acrylics, and collage, the show presents two dozen spirited and surreal works inspired by history, travel, alchemy, music, and even books from the shelves of EPL.  You can catch their show through July 7th, and after that you can view more of their work by visiting the following: Mr. Campbell’s Flickr site and Ms. DuBois’ Flickr site.  Recently, we spoke with Mr. Campbell and Ms. DuBois via email about drawing vs. painting, Egyptian imagery, Henryk Gorecki’s 3rd Symphony, the circus, and what they’re working on next.

“King Leonidas” by Timothy L. Campbell

We are proud to welcome Alice DuBois and Timothy L. Campbell back to EPL this month for a brand-new Local Art @ EPL exhibit.  After making their solo library debuts in 2010, the Evanston-based artists have teamed up to present two dozen stunning works that mix oils, acrylics, and collage.  Spirited, surreal, and endlessly creative, the paintings are inspired by history, travel, alchemy, music, and even books from EPL’s own collection which are included in the display.  You can catch their show on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch through the end of June and also view more of their work at the following: Ms. DuBois’ Flickr site and Mr. Campbell’s Flickr site.  Finally, make sure to stop right back here on Off the Shelf later this month for a featured interview with the artists themselves.  Stay tuned.

“Rose in Winter” by Laura Dudnik

We are happy to announce an exciting May treat for our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  Throughout this month, we’re proudly featuring Art Play with Poetry, a creative collaboration that showcases nine diverse artists from the Noyes Cultural Arts Center and their interpretations of twelve honored poems from the 2006-2011 Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards.  Featuring photography along with works in watercolor, oil, and pastels, this impressive marriage of local artists and poets is on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch through the end of May and is not to be missed.

An Interview with Ronnie Dukes

Ronnie Dukes is a local painter, illustrator, designer, and the latest artist to be featured in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  His show – titled Vitruvian Hero: Act I – was on display at EPL’s Main Branch throughout April and inspired by Da Vinci’s famous Vitruvian Man drawing.  The first of a planned three-part series, the collection explores the possibilities of “super” human evolution using elements of sci-fi and fantasy in the striking style of comic-book illustrations.  If you missed it, however, don’t fret.  You can view more of Mr. Dukes’ work by visiting his website, and he recently spoke with us via email about his artistic beginnings at Maggie Daley’s Gallery 37 and in Harlem, his creative process, and his vision for his forthcoming graphic novel.

We are very happy to introduce painter and photographer Alice Sharie-Revelski as the latest artist in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  From now through March 31st, her collection A Glimpse of Galapagos will be on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch.  Captured during a 2011 trip to the Galapagos Islands, her photographs explore the diverse plant and animal life found on the islands including the Darwin finch and the great tortoise (pictured).

"Red Flags"

We are thrilled to introduce local sculptor and native Evanstonian Victor Nelson as the latest artist in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  From now through the end of February, six of his stunning sculptures will be on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch including “Red Flags” (pictured).  Inspired by his career in architecture and constructed of steel, concrete, and wood, his contemporary, abstract pieces explore “the positive and negative spaces created by structural objects and strive to make the viewer aware of how they change when seen from all sides.”  You can preview Mr. Nelson’s work by visiting his website.
