maryna dMaryna Danylovych is a Chicagoland painter and the latest featured artist in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  From now until December 31st, more than three dozen of her impressionist still lifes and landscapes will be on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Library.  Inspired by her favorite painters Monet, Renoir, and O’Keefe, Danylovych strives to ensure that the emotions she puts into her pictures reach the people who view them.  We recently spoke with her via email about her artistic origins, creative process, and future plans.

Local Art @ EPL

Local Art @ EPL

image0000Dozens of talented teens from EPL’s very own Loft are the next featured artists in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  During the months of September and October, Evanston students from Chute, Haven, and Nichols Middle Schools read works by G. Neri.  To capture their impressions of his writing, the students created art in a variety of forms including poetry, graphic works, and pencil sketches.  Students will continue to explore the impact of G. Neri’s work on their lives through class discussions, and you can catch their exhibit through November 30th on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Library.  Don’t miss it!


An Interview with Alain Potrel

Puck_16x20Alain Potrel is a Chicagoland painter, NU Research Associate, and the latest featured artist in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  His show – titled Ambidextrous – is currently on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Library where you can catch it through October 31.  Specializing in Jackson Pollock-esque oils, Mr. Potrel has shown throughout the U.S., Canada, and France though he admits, “I never really studied art.  I just paint my life, and life is an art.”  We recently spoke with him via email about his artistic origins, creative process, and future plans.

eilerWe are happy to introduce Chicagoland artist Hanna Eiler as the next to be featured in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  From now through July 31st, nearly two dozen of her imaginative 3-D collage paintings will be display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Library.  Depicting British royal history from Edward IV to Elizabeth I along with abstract ideas of quantum physics, Eiler strives to explore the moment when “the ideas of the past merge with the realities of the present and the future.”  You can find more of Eiler’s work by visiting the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago.

We are pleased to introduce Evanston artist Ted Glasoe as the next to be featured in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  Fresh off his stunning May exhibit showcasing EPL’s peregrine falcons, Glasoe now presents a selection of breathtaking Lake Michigan photographs designed to explore “the compelling and unexpected alliance of nature and our urban environment.”  You can catch his show through June 30th on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Library and find more of Glasoe’s work by visiting his website.  Also, make sure to check back with Off the Shelf blog later in June for an interview with the artist himself.  Stay tuned.


An Interview with the E/ artgroup

The E/ artgroup is an eclectic collection of Chicagoland artists whose work is currently on display as part of our popular exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  Comprised of artists Mary Beth Bellon, Susanne Clark, Sarah Hahne, Mary Hilger, bert leveille, Nan Seidler, and Victoria Senn, the group began exhibiting together 7 years ago and is dedicated to “growing artistically” while exploring “their own unique and individual styles creating collages, watercolors, oils, mixed media, fabric constructions, and digital media.”  You can catch their show through June 7th on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Library, and you can also learn more about the group by visiting their website.  Recently, we spoke with Mary Beth Bellon, Sarah Hahne, bert leveille, and Victoria Senn via email about their artistic backgrounds, experiences in the E/ artgroup, and impressions of the Chicagoland art scene.

The Peregrine Falcons of EPL

Falcon watchers rejoice!  Not only have Nona and Squawker just hatched the newest additions to their falcon family, but now they’re also the stars of a special photography exhibit by Ted Glasoe.  An award-winning Evanston artist, Glasoe has captured more than 3500 stunning images of our EPL falcons over the past five years, and for this must-see display, he selected the 10 shots that best “show the peregrine’s beauty, power, and personality.”  The exhibit runs until June 8th on the 2nd floor landing of EPL’s Main Library, and you can see even more of Glasoe’s work by visiting his website.  Don’t miss it!
