An Interview with Ed Ravine

ed ravineEdward Ravine is a practicing psychotherapist, local painter, and the next featured artist in our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  His show – Live Life Like a River – is currently on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Library where you can catch it through May 31st.  Representing 15 years of artistic study under Leslie Hirshfield at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, Ravine’s striking watercolors capture his quiet moments spent in the peace of wild places like Utah’s Big Cottonwood Canyon and Glencoe’s Skokie Lagoons.  We recently spoke with him via email about how the Vietnam War influenced his art, Winslow Homer, his forthcoming book, and his need for time in the wilderness.

Local Art @ EPL

Talking "Compulsion" with the Next Theatre Company

compulsionEvanston’s very own Next Theatre Company isn’t afraid to challenge its audience.  For nearly 35 years the company has remained committed to producing “socially provocative, artistically adventurous work,” and this season’s staging of Rinne Groff’s Compulsion stays true to that mission.  Based on the true story of Meyer Levin and his obsession with Anne Frank’s diary, the complex tale explores the fictional Sid Silver’s passionate fixation on Anne’s story as he attempts to honor her legacy.  You can catch Compulsion through November 17th at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, and EPL cardholders can purchase 2-for-1 tickets using the promotional code FRANK.  We recently spoke via email with Next’s artistic director Jenny Avery about Compulsion’s critical reception, the history behind the play, puppetry, and the company’s future plans.

Local Art @ EPL

We are happy to announce an exciting May treat for our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  Throughout this month, we’re proudly featuring Art Play with Poetry, a creative collaboration that showcases nine diverse artists from the Noyes Cultural Arts Center and their interpretations of twelve honored poems from the 2006-2011 Jo-Anne Hirshfield Memorial Poetry Awards.  Featuring photography along with works in watercolor, oil, and pastels, this impressive marriage of local artists and poets is on display on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch through the end of May and is not to be missed.

A Talk with the Artists of ‘Thursdays with Leslie’

Thursdays with Leslie is an impressive collaborative exhibition by ten talented painters from the Noyes Cultural Art Center and the latest show in our popular Local Art @ EPL series.  Currently on display through February 28th on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch, Thursdays with Leslie features an ecclectic mix of watercolor, oil, and pastel works created by the skilled students of instructor Leslie Hirshfield.  I recently spoke with many of the Thursdays with Leslie artists via email about their artistic backgrounds, experiences at the Noyes Cultural Arts Center, and impressions of the Chicagoland art scene.

We are thrilled to announce a special February treat for our ongoing exhibition series Local Art @ EPL.  Throughout this month, we’re proudly featuring Thursdays with Leslie, an exhibit showcasing the work of ten local painters from the Noyes Cultural Arts Center.  For Thursdays with Leslie, these talented students selected the best watercolor, oil, and pastel works from years spent honing their skills under the expert eye of instructor Leslie Hirshfield.  Though their subjects and style might vary, these diverse artists are clearly united by their “enduring love of creating art.”  So make plans to catch Thursdays with Leslie on the 2nd floor of EPL’s Main Branch before this month ends, and check back with Off the Shelf later in February for a featured interview with the artists themselves.  In the meantime, we invite you to meet the artists below:
