They are backpacks containing books and other items to help you explore a topic like Space, Bugs, or (coming soon) Microscopes. This collection was created with a grant from NASA in 2019.
How long can I borrow a backpack? What if they are all checked out?
Backpacks check out for two weeks at a time. You can find them in our catalog under NASA Backpack/Take Home STEM Kit. If all the backpacks are checked out, you may place a hold and will be notified when it is ready to be picked up.
Who can borrow a backpack? Where can I get it?
Only Evanston Public Library cardholders may borrow a backpack. They may only be checked out or returned at the Main Library's Children's Desk.
Why should I borrow one of these backpack kits?
Because there's so much to discover! The Space backpack has books about space and starwatching. There's a telescope and planisphere to help you find specific stars and planets, and two different lenses to see things so much closer than you could with just your eyes. There's also a Robot Mouse to learn a little bit about coding in a super fun way.
The Bug backpack has a bug catching net, specimen jar, and a lens you can attach to a phone to see what you've caught up close and even take photos. Examine some insects and see the life cycle of the honeybee. And read all about the bugs you find in your own backyard!
In our Microscope backpack (coming soon) try your hand at using a real microscope and have fun doing experiments with the contents of the kit. Gather material outside and create slides to see what tiny creatures you have found. Or take a look at some of the prepared slides to see some everyday things very close up!
All the backpack kits come with instructions for the different items and ideas of other ways to explore!
